When I went to work with Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP), I taught ten-week classes in Creative Drama for five year-olds. The class was titled ‘From Story to Stage’ and in each session we would create or adapt a story and then perform it for an audience of families and friends as well as other students in the school. It was a big call for five year-olds. I was amazed at how well they did. This was the first one. It was largely written by the children who chose and created the characters that they wanted to play. This scenario is hard to reuse but it might inspire a new story. I would Narrate the story, so that I could give directions from within the story, cue them and fill in anything that they forgot.

One day Stinky Feet decided to get up to some mischief. She had been learning new spells and decided it was time to put them into practice. She snuck up on the Panther and cast a spell on her that made the Panther follow her back to the castle. Then she locked the Panther underneath the castle.
Then she found the Horse grazing and cast a spell on her and locked her up with the Panther.
Still looking for mischief, Queen Stinky Feet found the Kittens by themselves playing while their Mother was out hunting. She cast a spell on them and she took them back to the castle.
Well, Queen Stinky Feet had had a very busy day, so she curled up to have a nap and was soon asleep.
While she was sleeping, the Mother Cat came to find her Kittens gone. She started calling and calling for them. Finally, as she neared the castle, she heard mewing. She looked through the window and saw her kittens. Quickly the Mother Cat went to the door and used her claw in the lock. Before too long, the door swung open and the Kittens, Horse and Panther escaped.
Queen Stinky Feet was still sleeping.
Scene 3
The Panther, the Horse and the Cats were all resting and eating in their homes when Queen Stinky Feet woke up. She was furious. She jumped up and down and pulled her hair out. Then she had an idea!
She snuck up to the castle where the Princess was combing her hair and waiting for Curty to play. She cast a spell on the Princess and locked her under the castle. Well, casting that spell tired Queen Stinky Feet out and so she went to sleep again.
Soon Curty came to the castle to play with the Princess. He couldn't find her, so he looked everywhere. Eventually he found the Panther pacing on her rock. He asked her if she had seen the Princess. The Panther had not, but she said she would help Curty.
They came to where the Horse was eating some hay and asked the Horse if she had seen the Princess. The Horse said she had not, but she would help them.
They came to where the Mother Cat and the Kittens were washing themselves and asked if they had seen the Princess. The Mother Cat said she had an idea where the Princess was and asked them to follow her.
Soon they were at Queen Stinky Feet's window. There was the Princess.
Quickly the Mother Cat pulled out her claw and opened the door. The Princess ran out and greeted Curty and his new friends. The Princess invited the animals to come and live in the castle with her.
The Cats slept in the kitchen where they had lots of milk. The Horse stayed in the barn and ate hay and the Panther paced back and forth in front of the castle, guarding the castle gates.
